|
NAIROBI - The Voices United Choir (VUC) held a series of concerts on 21st and 22nd March 2009 at the Kenya National Theatre where they officially launched their third studio album. Titled Mzee wa Kazi, the album has a more laid back feel with the choir opting to do more traditional / african singles while still giving the awethentic VUC signature feel and live instrumentation that the choir is known for. There was a 3pm and 6pm concert on each of the days of the launch where the 20+ member choir entertained their die hard fans and guests alike.

With various costume changes in the shows and simple and elegant backdrops, the choir performed their hit songs while introducing their new songs to the audience and the world at large. They also lauched a new website www.vuc.co.ke although the site was still not in operation by the time we went to press. Band leader and producer Chris "Phatstix" Adwar produced the album.

VUC seem to be changing up their music genre as they shift to the largely untapped traditional genre, albeit done professionally. Maybe it was an experimental album, who knows. Also worth noting is that VUC launched the album barely two weeks to the anniversary of the Konza tragedy that claimed the lives of seven of its members in a bus accident on April 1st 2004. They were travelling to Mombasa where there was a frontal tyre burst past the Konza ranch that is a few kilometers from Machakos junction, and the bus veered off the road and overturned a couple of times, finally resting upside down. Six VUC members died on the spot while the seventh one died three days later in hospital. A couple of others got injured and others escaped unhurt.
