VIRTUE MAGAZINE LAUNCH RECAP
Fri, 08 Aug 2008

A new gospel magazine has been launched. Virtue Magazine features the latest in Kenyan gospel news and events as well as a recap of the international scene. Though the magazine has had a few edition runs and was launched in Kenya in December 2007, the official launch was held on 2nd and 3rd August 2008 at Upendo Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. The magazine's proprietor Kirk (David Karanu) had organized a 2-day concert that featured Zaidi ya Mziki, KiKi, Chosen, Talanta Award Winner D Kamaa, R&B group EnC, Polycarp, Tanzanian-born rapper God's Replikah (Obed Kissaru) and American reggaeton group Crucified. 6 DJs were on hand to keep the party going including DJ Jey, DJ Ngugy, DJ Alfie, DJ Pop, DJ Emilio and DJ Fresh.

On Saturday, the concert started promptly at 6pm with a mix session by DJs on rotation. Thereafter was a well choreographed intro of the concert. The lights dimmed, as the spotlight shone on Kiki as she made her way to the stage from the side door singing her single. Next up was Polycarp with a lingala banger making way for the girl-duo EnC dropped an R&B jam. Gospel group Chosen, who were one of the pioneer gospel groups in Kenya, were next on stage. Their reggae joint solidified and proved that they are still in the game (and they have been performing quite often in the previous years). Zaidi ya Mziki, who are still on their US summer tour then dropped their hit song Fundi wa Mbao and closed out the intro. The MCs for the weekend were Eric and Imani (Faith Mwaura) and kept the crowd engaged. The artists were then back on stage and performed more songs on rotation this time including God's Replikah, D Kamaa, Elvis and Crucified. The DJs also showed their skills as the mixed music to the crowd's delight. Halfway during the performances, Virtue Magazine's founder and publisher Kirk Karanu spelt out the vision of the magazine and officially launched it. There was a photograph session for the next issue of the magazine. Check out the picture gallery and see most of the photos.

On Sunday evening, the event started later than scheduled though the DJs kept everyone entertained with great Gospel mixes. After the intro to the show, the artists churned out more of their hits all evening. Also performing was dancer Ndwale (Carol Ndambuki) with an impressive dance to a Deitrick Haddon song. It was then time for the DJ battle. Each DJ was given about 5 minutes to impress the crowd. First up was DJ Jey followed by DJ Ngugy then DJ Alfie. Incidentally, that was the order in which they won as DJ Jey scooped Virtue Magazine's best DJ. All DJs were presented with trophies. At the end of the evening, it seemed as if the event had ended all too soon. Kirk was impressed by the launch and promised to put up another concert next year.

Virtue Magazine is published every two months. The premier issue featured gospel artist Mercy Masika. The current issue features christian model Ruth Kinuthia, Miss Kenya 2007. Look out for the issue from select vendord in the US and all over Kenya.
