SCHOOL UNREST: WHAT'S GOING ON?

School Unrest - What's Going On?

This has now become a worrying trend. In the last few days alone, dozens of High Schools in Kenya have gone on strike across the country. In Nairobi alone, these include Lenana School, Nairobi School, Sunshine Secondary School, Jamhuri High School, Aquinas High School among others. In Upper Hill School, one student died when the dormitory was set ablaze. The strikes have been blamed on several factors including fears that this year's mock exams will add to their final KCSE grade with others even bringing a theory on devil worship in schools. In most cases, the students are setting their dorms ablaze. Even the private schools have not been spared either. Hundreds of students have also been arrested and are facing charges.

Look at what The Standard is reporting. The new dimension linking devil worship to the wave of violence and destruction was introduced by a senior principal of the respected national school Mary Hill Girls in Thika, Sister Elizabeth Nziwa. She claimed that devil worship was partially to blame for the unrest in schools. Contributing during a principals’ meeting convened by Thika DC John Litunda, Nziwa claimed that a student had confessed to her of a network of devil worship agents in many schools, some of which have been hit by the unrest. "We are dealing with a complex problem which requires divine intervention and prayers. This is a spiritual war against the devil’s agents. "This issue is spiritual and not just fear of exams as has been touted," she said.

Here is another exerpt. In the city, destruction was averted at Nairobi School where three boys were arrested in the dead of night with jerricans of petrol. They confessed to the police that they had been sent by schoolmates to buy petrol to burn the school. At private school Le Verne Boys High in Nairobi, three boys were arrested with petrol with which they planned to burn dormitories. As though reading from a similar script, boys at Nairobi’s Sunshine Secondary, another private school, became restless and refused to eat or attend classes. The management had little choice but to close the school and order the boys to leave. At the prestigious Kenya High, another national institution, panicky parents rushed to pick their children after a rumour that tension was high. However, a teacher at the school said there was "no cause for alarm".

We may also add to the debate and point out that it may also be peer pressure. Check this out. Nandi’s Moi Boys High Sirgoi also joined the list of schools closed in the Rift Valley following unrest. The boys had just had supper and watched TV news (of course they saw other school riots) when, without warning, they went on the rampage, smashing dining hall and classroom windows. I think also the schools are competing with each other in terms of who has the best school bus with the loudest music system.

I couldn't believe it when I read about competitions of the most pimped out school buses! I'm persuaded that dialogue can preempt these strikes rather than school officials taking a hardline stance leaving students frustrated. On the other hand students should realize that at the end of the day they are the ones that lose. I pray that cool heads prevail even as we pray for this situation.

This is absurd ati wana taka kuwa high class. Schools are meant for education not for strikes?? They should appreciate the fact that they can actually afford to go to school!! I heard thay also striked because they wanted to use cellfones in the classroom. All in all lets keep them in prayers

What the students have done in the mentioned schools by burning dormotories and classes should be dealt with by obviously punshing the offenders sensibly. At the same time investigations must be made as to why all these is happening because they has to be a reason behind all these evil.Six months ago kenyans went through a trying time at the post elections violence and this particular problem must be dealt with immediately so i urge the kenyan political and church leaders to intervene.

THE IRREVERENCE WE SEE STUDENTS EXPRESSING ON THE STREET THAT IRREVERENCE IS IN THE HEART,THE EXPLOSION ON DOMITARIES AND SCHOOL PROPERTY GOES BEYOND WHAT WE ARE WITNESSING TO THE FACT THAT THE EXPLOSION HAS OCCURED IN THE HEART, THE DEVERSTATION IS BIG THAT ONLY GOD IS BIG ENOUGH TO DO THE HEALING.
I STRONGLY ARGE PARENTS TO REVIVE THE FAMILY GODLY ALTARS AND DO PARENTING WITHIN BIBLICAL PARAMETERS,PARENT CHILD RSHIP MUST BE RECIPRECAL,AS THE THE CHILD IS CALLED TO OBEYED

These students must realize that everything they do will affect their future. What are they trying to prove? Don't they realize things are hard enough with only a high school degree? They should realize that destroying dormitories and classes will only hurt them in the future. I remember I joined a strike in high school so that I could see my parents. Well I eneded staying a month at home and missing crucial exams and my parents were very disappointed with me. We should all pray for them.

Hey I just want to say that I really think there should be a revival in leading young people to God. I remember when I was in school we had some other young people come to do missions in schools. Its time for young men and women of God to come together to start doing something, faith without action is dead, prayer is a start but we have to walk with our prayers as well. anyone interested?? leave a line!!
