| R-KAY TAKES 2008 IYME AWARD |
| Sun, 22 Jun 2008 | ||||||
Producer Robert ‘R-Kay’ Kamanzi was on Friday 20th June named winner of the International Young Music Entrepreneur 2008 at a ceremony in London edging out competitors from Poland, Nigeria, Colombia, Estonia, India, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia, and Venezuela. The award was presented by Cherie Booth, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. R-Kay won a prize fund of £7,500 to be spent on a project to be developed with the British Council. Ten finalists were selected by participating British Council Offices across the globe to compete for the 2008 Award. This is part of the Council’s efforts to develop young entrepreneurs working in the music industry in emerging markets, recognizing their creative, entrepreneurial and leadership abilities. R-Kay is also the CEO of Moja Entertainment Ltd.
IYME judge, John Dyer, of Domino Recording Ltd, read out the citation prepared by the judges for Kamanzi: "Robert demonstrates outstanding discipline and tenacity. He is a passionate advocate for the power of music, and has the capacity to act as an advocate across business, social, educational and political perspectives. He also showed a real commitment to his region. He is an award winning music producer, with a proven track record as both an entrepreneur and as a champion for the development of the music industry in Kenya."
In her speech, Cherie commented on the awards programme “I’ve watched these awards develop over the past five years. It has been wonderful to see the connections between young creative entrepreneurs grow, to hear about them collaborating and trading.” For the third year in a row the award has gone to Africa, previous winners have come from Morocco and Nigeria. The judges have previously made special commendations to finalists from India and Indonesia. Early in January 2008, R-Kay and a couple of his friends formed the Wakenya Pamoja peace project in the aftermath of the 2007 General Election violence. They released the self titled single and video that featured dozens of local artists uniting in song and appealing for peace. KenyanGospel.com teamed up with Wakenya Pamoja in a effort to raise money for victims of the post election violence and helped raise a couple of hundreds of dollars through the sale of the single and video on the site.
