Tina

Tina Nzuki

Tina Nzuki has been Nairobi's most recognizable christian radio presenter. She started off at Family FM, then moved to Hope FM and is currently the breakfast show presenter at Hot 96 (formerly Y96). She is also a versatile MC having done several concerts including the recent Zaidi ya Mziki launch (watch the launch in the videos section). Her move from the christian stations to Hot 96 raised eyebrows in the christian community.  She now shares her story with DJ Fresh.

Having kept postponing the meeting with Tina, I was finally glad to meet a dear friend and one of my favorite radio personalities. I will cut to the chase and make this article as brief as possible. I asked her the number one question that I guess was in everyone's mind. Why did she move to a secular station? She confided that when the station approached her for the position, she quickly wanted to turn it down. In fact, this was not the first (or second) time a secular station offering her a job. However, in this case, she felt the calling to "go into the world" (Mat 28). This was also confirmed by people she looked up to for spiritual guidance who urged her to take up the position and use it to spread light in darkness. At this point I was like, mmm..., how is this going to work? I mean, imagine Tina outro's a song saying "...and that was Snoop Dogg. Next up is Beyonce with shake your ...."

She admitted that this was a challenge. However, she is seeing some positive change with her workers and believes its only a matter of time before her belief

rubs on to everyone around her. She also begins all her shows with a prayer live on air and has gotten several slots in her show where she is allowed to play Christian music. Further more, the station has availed the times 5-6am every weekday strictly for gospel music. By the way, her Head of Radio, Jimmy Gathu, set me up for a meeting and told me he was looking for mixes for his 5-6am slot every weekday. The station wanted a youthful feel with as much mixes as possible. He then offered the 5-6am slot and is something I am working with DJ Moz and Soxxy on logistics. Kubamba on Hot 96? You never know! Anyway, I digress.

Tina, together with her co-host Antony Ngatia, present the breakfast show on Hot 96 every weekday from 6-10am.
