Musters

In our on-going profile of Kenyan groups in the US, we introduce "The Musters". The members of this dynamic group include actors, singers, dancers, comedians, rappers, preachers and poets among others. Dan Njenga, the group's president and Dan Kamau, the Missions and Events Director give us more insight.

The thing that stands out most is the name. Why Musters? The name stands for the gathering of an army with one Master (God) to fight a common enemy. How did the group start? The group started in August 2006. During the ASCA conference in Durham, NC, Joshua Generation (the group from Indiana that we profiled earlier) impressed four friends namely Njenga, Kamau, Job and Casey with their presentation and general group activities. This led them to start their own group in NC (North Carolina) with a similar structure that would help them grow as Christians. In fact, their first mission was a team of 18 to Indiana to meet Joshua Generation.

The group meets every Saturday from 11am-3pm for fellowship and practice and on Sunday at 5:30-8pm for Praise and Worship and Bible study. Their activities include dance, drama, singing, sports and other fun activities associated with the youth. The meetings are all held at North Carolina State University's East King Village Hall.

The Musters have been on continuous missions in the recent past visiting Indiana twice and also Charlotte, South Carolina leaving a spark in the SC youth to start their own group (the chain reaction!). They also go out to missions almost every Sunday to different Churches and fellowships in Raleigh and Durham cities. They were invited as Key participants in the ENYO Intl Conference whose keynote speaker was Hon Raila Odinga and the occasion was also graced by Members of Congress, the U.N, O.A.U and the Mayor of Durham among other dignitaries.

God has also blessed The Musters with Meggie (Margaret Waruri) who is their Patron who helps to shape and encourage them in Godly counsel. She believes in embracing them as they are, loving and then correcting them. The Musters believe that she is more of a friend, a sister and a mom to them which is portrayed in the way they interact with her. They are also under the leadership of their president Dan Njenga whom God is using to lead them to deeper levels spiritually. He believes that prayer is the answer to every situation and thus every member in the group has a prayer partner. The president is assisted by the ridiculously talented Dan Kamau who is the Missions & Events Director. Sam Mchalongo (the comedian) is the Transport Manager, Rebecca Namachanja is the Secretary and Ruth Ngugi is her assistant. Solomon Kamau is in the Food and Attire department and doubles up as the Treasurer and Job Kahehu is his assistant. Frank Mwangi is the Activities Coordinator and Casey is one of the founders.

The group gets support from their parents as well as churches and individuals. As Kamau puts it, The Musters are courageous young men and women who against all odds and norms have refused the notion that when young people come to America, they become rebels."
