Inmates at the Nairobi West GK Prison were treated to an early Christmas treat when a local gospel music group staged a concert at the facility. Gospel crooner, Kanjii Mbugua thrilled the 400 plus male prisoners with electrifying gospel tunes and performances during the concert, which was organized by the Mavuno Worship Project (MWP). Other notable artistes that performed included Kora award winner Neema and Astar and Michelle of the group Hip Hope Crew. The concert, which was a charity event, saw MWP donate over 300 beds and mattresses to the prison. This was the first male prison in Kenya to receive beds. Speaking at the event, Kanji said that the prison concert was one of the group's social justice initiatives. "Our main objective is to touch the lives of the less fortunate in the society through music. This initiative was mooted with the aim of transforming lives and changing negative attitudes in our communities," said Kanjii

On his part, Mr. Omondi lauded the MWP for the donation and termed it as an early Christmas treat for the prisoners. We are very gratefull for the kind gesture you have demonstrated. The donation fits in very well with our Prisons reforms efforts and we hope other well wishers will follow your example. said Omondi.
The social justice program is part of the groups initiative dubbed This Is Africa (TIA) through which MWP toured the US last October and successfully staged a series of concerts in eight states including Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia and Indiana over a period of seven weeks. The proceeds from the tour were used to purchase the beds.
TIA was a follow up of the successful launch of the Mavuno Worship Project (MWP) double CD gospel album in September. MWP is also set to unveil their DVD East Africas first live DVD recording in mid December.
