GOODBYE HIP HOPE - HELLO CHIT CHAT
Mon, 20 Apr 2009

NAIROBI - We officially say goodbye to what we have known for the past few years as Hip Hope. No, don't be sad. We are only saying bye to the name and not the members. Now we officially welcome Chit Chat, the newest gospel supergroup in the country. The group members include Astar (Richard Njau), Bupe (Christopher Bupe), Dee (Diana Nduba), Rigga (Charles Righa), Michelle (Michelle Kwambo) and Cii (Ciiru Karanja). Why don't we just say that Hip Hope has officially changed its name to Chit Chat? It is not merely a name change but a new direction in their music and delivery. The individual artists are also shelving their solo careers to commit to the group. Why the name Chit Chat? Keep reading, we'll answer most of your questions. Let us first give you the history to better understand what has happening.

Chit Chat

Hip Hope started as a Kijiji Records based outfit that featured Astar, Juliani, Rigga and Michelle as well as DJ Vic, DJ Sparrxx and Producer Blackman. Since then, Blackman moved out of Kijiji Records and started Blackman Entertainment, DJ Vic, who was Hip Hope's first official DJ won the Mr Kenya title and moved on. They then got former Family FM's (now Radio 316) DJ Sparrxx but he has since become a Pastor at Mavuno Church. More recently, Juliani left the outfit as he sealed a record deal with Gatwitch Records in the UK.

The group also grew with the addition of Bupe, Cii and Dee. During performances, they would also jump on each others songs as they backed each other up. They then began seeing a bigger vision beyond their solo careers and music. They decided to switch up their music style and came up with the group Chit Chat. They describe their music as Hip Pop (a mix of pop music and hip hop). Their lyrics have also changed quite a bit.

Taking the example of their first Chit Chat single called Buzzin, Astar who is the group's leader puts it this way. "Before we were all in your face Jesus. Now we spark the questions into your mind and heart e.g. this feeling. Oh this feeling. We make you wonder what we are talking about? When there they ask us what we were talking about, we then bring it out. The feeling that we are talking about it that of the Love of Christ. Just know that what we are doing isn't by our choice. And the change in style of music and packaging of the message is from God... to reach those who are trapped in religion and also those who don't bother to give the gospel a chance because of the way it was presented to them eg. get saved or you will go to hell."

And we swiftly ask whether they fear diluting the message of the Gospel to which he replies that they are not diluting. He adds that the group is 100% gospel and they are just repackaging the same Gospel of Christ in a different way. Not the same way people are used to.

So lets go back to the name. Why Chit Chat? What is it? Chit Chat, as they put it, is taken from their music. The music they will be churning out will always want people to converse and chit chat about the message. Their debut single Buzzin is a jump-up party anthem. It is generally about "a feeling" whose effect climaxes in a captivating slogan "Soo-Sweet-Buzzin-Juu-Kaboo!!"

Listen to their new single and watch the world premier of their new music video from Mike and SK Blue of Sakata Media. Also view pics of the video shoot. Let us know what you think of the new group.

Honestly, they fell below par! I was expecting much more. Felt like I was watching an amateur group making its debut. Kijiji Records I know you can do better. Peace and Blessings.

pipo do not miss the point of Christianity we are created in God's image and there is a difference between a christian artist and a secular one .. in that Christians pay little attention to body image those are just worldly things...we care only about the word of GOD.. listen to what they are saying not the beats or their looks..

Hi Kanji, I have watched you for many years, and i know you have raw talent. Thanks for allowing God to use your gifts. The rest of the members look great! The only thing i can say in love, it seemed like in this video, the group was trying toooooo..... hard to look cute. I believe it is ok to sing about other things in life, but please dig a little deeper. I know you have in you, and i wish the best.

Am not against christians living it up but i lose the message in the video in the light of the glamour of it. The nails, makeup, clad, the image seems to standout more than the message your trying to pass across. Overall well done people.

In the quest for reaching the lost we must be careful not to compromise and when the message of christ is taken out of the music, the only people who will be asking for meaning to the songs are the christians, the rest will listen to the music bob their heads and keep living their life, they will interpret it however they want. Personally I have no problem with the make up and clad and all, but we need to be sure that we are reaching the lost hearts and not reaching into their pockets only. God speed chit chat

Dudes and Dudetts, I personally think the vid is a\\\'ight, but on the other hand, you would realy think it was a secular hit if you didn\\\'t know about CHIT CHAT. There is one way to God, and only Yeshua, Wasee.

By the way lisa, si ati si ni haters, si umeona Wasee pia wame weka gloss,
c\\\'mon y\\\'all know that people of the world would be turned off by the lyrics if they were trying to find a real message.

this song sucks ingine mbaya, yani hip hop is dying everywhere even in kenya mazee they should just stick to wat they were doing before. yani ngoma ka out tonight by mish, na in jesus name by astar, nd ngoma za bupe. mazee that was the real hip hop nd they had a messege but me nikiwa msee sija savika hii ngoma itanileta kwa god aje? this suck if ur gonna do gospel do it right, nd if ur gonna do secular do it right ddont confuse wasee coz im really confused wat this can be categorized as worst 4 minutes of my life.

I love it. This is tight stuff. They have taken a good approach to Gospel music, the music rivals any secular music in the industry. Great combination of Hip Hop and Pop. The outfit is also good. You have demonstrated that you can dress up even when your are saved.
You should now do a real hip-hop track since you can all rap with some gem vocals from Cii and Dee.
Haters will always hate. Creativity cannot be locked up in a bottle and assume it will be ok, you have to be dynamic in this industry having in mind that Chit Chat is fighting for the lost souls.
Cheers Chit Chat. Great quality too.

Yani Njoro clearly you don't seem to understand what these guys are up to...and you're just hating..you must have had worse 4 minutes in your life..check out 4th avenue jones, soljahz and the like.
I'm happy that these guys have gotten a different way to spread the gospel..i heard on an interview that the feeling is of this song is about salvation.
Noone complained when isaac blackman sung a song about a ceiling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is such a two faced approach...dont hate what you dont understand. I think DJ fresh should do something more indepth so every one can understand.

well, i got a alot to say but let me reserve some comments and just say, i'm highly disappointed in you Astar. just remember, this calling isn't for you- there are destinies attached to your calling and you do not seem to understand. this is not a popularity/ celebrity game, this shsould be ministry so treat it like so or GOD WILL REPLACE YOU!
at Thu, 30 Apr 2009 17:0222   by Julie
wow susan - how judgemental of you......is that what Gods told you to tell Astar or is it what Susan is telling Astar. How about you do your part, and let him do his part........you not the judge! if you have nothing positive to say- well how about you dont say it.

The song is ok, but reading through the comment jameni, stop hating!
The face that Cece Winans is all glamorous and everything does not mean that she is less of a Christian!
Gals u look gr8, dudes too.
Bigup Kanji...endelea kutubariki.
The fact taht you are receiving rave reviews should be proof that yo doing something good!
Kumbuka, only God can judge you. What would Jesus say!

No one complains when an american puts on makeup dresses well in their video or maybe y\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'all think that they look like that when they get out of bed in the morning. The problem with Christians is that you do not know how to celebrate your own. The world does an extremely good job at that even when it is not worth it. no wonder we are disappointing those who are truly looking for the answer and want nothing to do with the gospel.
Chit chat i am proud of you and because of your love for God he will multiply you in the midst of being bad mouthed.

BLessings kibao, you guyz are destined fr greatness.

@ joey, it aint gospel, its secular
@ favoured, aint nobody complaining about their make up, except maybe one person, all we sayin is we are in the world but not of the world, we dont have to water down the gospel to fit in or to get the unborn again into the kingdom. This is a move that is meant to come up with music that will supposedly be played in clubs coz it will have a wider audience, just remember with great talent/power comes great responsibity, remember the parable of the talent? When the master comes to collect, I hope the answer will not be we poured some water on the gospel in the hope that many more will come into the kingdom. When you are in the club dancing with your chick/guy and the song "this feeling... oh this feeling..." plays I can assure you there is only one feeling you are gonna be feeling........
at Fri, 15 May 2009 17:0828   by joy, NY
@ delilah, when I saac blackman sang a song about a ceiling!!!!!!! no one said anything coz what are the words there after.......... jumpin up to the ceiling what a wonderful feelin, LORD you have my back, always defend me when am under attack. Clearly he is singing to God, no questions asked

I love the make up, the glam the effort that went into making sure that it looked good...and I have been their no.1 fan for all their singles and collabos since the get go...but this song is a disappointment...I am all about taking the kingdom by force but quite if I didnt know who or what hip hope was initially I wouldnt know what this group was about through "buzzin" as in really?

I am hoping the up coming single is more revealing of who and what they are..
at Fri, 22 May 2009 19:3330   by favoured
@ Joy NY. You are right but when one has failed if you beat them down as some are doing how are they supposed to get up and try again and hit the mark. If you read your Bible not even God the Father does not talk to you like this when you have failed him and i am sure many times like all of us. Love them pray for them. all this back and forth is not helping them. You scar them with words they might give up and go back to the world who will celebrate them and value them which i am surewe all desire and God gives us that. Your Bible says that He does not punish us as we deserve. So do the same for your brother and sister. Their are better ways to correct people.

the song is fairish. I say this coz it took me a while to get what it was about. My personal preference would be easy but creative and authentic videos. so it was not much different from what we see on TV. As for the message,
either it was a bit too hidden or it was irrelevant for today's Kenyan man and woman!
ADVICE: take your time to find the song and style God is putting in your hearts. no rush!
Otherwise, don't let up. keep at it. we need your talent.

Christians have adopted a culture that's purely unholy. am totally against hip hop culture because its 100% satanic. there is nothing like holy hip hop. before you get mad at me can you at least do a research about hip hop culture, its origin and what the believe in.
we have borrowed cultures from the world and branded the "holy".these are the same things God told Moses to warn israelites not to follow other pples methodology of worship. pls visit www.exministries.com for more.
