CHAT Awards

The 7th annual Chaguo La Teeniez Awards went down on Saturday 14th June 2008 at the Carnivore in Nairobi. M.O.G scooped all three awards they were nominated including Teeniez Gospel Group where they were up against Maximum Melodies, 5:01 and Wernono Crew as well as Teeniez Gospel Song for Zing Zing where they were up against Zaidi ya Mziki's Fundi wa Mbao, Wernono Crew's Wernono Anthem and Mercy Masika's Milele. But the biggest upset that the group pulled was winning Teeniez Hottest Dance Video (view the video in our videos page) beating Nameless' Salari, Mejja's Kuliendaje and Maddtraxx's Bodaboda. They also had the highest number of awards by a group or artist beating Mejja who had two. SK Blue proved he had lost no love with the teenagers when he changed to his afro fusion style by scopping the Teeniez Gospel Artist award edging out Astar, Mercy Masika and Juliani.

CHAT Awards 2008

Other highlights for the awards ceremony included Jimmy Gathu winning the Teeniez Lifetime Achievement Award as KTN's Esther Arunga, who was an MC at the 2008 Groove Awards, bagged Teeniez TV Queen award. Prime Minister Raila Odinga scopped the Teeniez Role Model award against Red Cross - Kenya, Prof. Wangari Maathai and Esther Passaris.

But Chaguo La Teeniez is known for more than just being an awards show. The entrance to the show is the most talked about than the actual event itself. This year was no different. Singer Wahu and her crew arrived in style on a motorcade of 3 Hummers. Artist Mejja, who also scopped Teeniez Red Carpet star arrived aboard a helicopter. He is not the only celeb to pull this stunt at this awards show though. A few years ago, artist Prezzo also arrived in a chopper he had rented from Wilson airport which was less than a mile from the venue and cost Kshs80,000! Code Red DJs unit who also won the Teeniez Spin Doctors award redefined their "red hot" slogan. They arrived as firefighters complete with a fire engine. Their frontman DJ Stylez also bagged Teeniez Style Celeb.

Last year, the awards show changed the naming of their categories to more teenage friendly names. They also had two rounds of voting for the nominees. Only teenagers aged between 13 and 19 are allowed to vote for their favourite artists and celebrities for the awards. The event is organized by The Insyder magazine, a publication dedicated to High Schools and teenagers and Fanta. This year, KenyanGospel.com and The Insyder have teamed up to bring you the complete list of winners and exclusive pictures.
