X-PO
X-Po

The moniker X-po stands for demonstrating Christ or a demonstration from Christ depending on which side you want to look at it. The latter denotes Christ working through him to bring out tangible results that bring glory to his name, while the former is mostly his evangelical mission for those who have not yet come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Dennis Nzuki a.k.a, X-po is one of the newest acts in the Gospel Rap Scene. X-po has worked with Pete Odera as a back ground vocalist during Donnie McClurkin’s concert in Kenya in August 2007 and during the ‘Messenger to Metropolis’ (Pete Odera’s Album) launch in October 2007. Some of you might remember him from the ‘Hip-hope’ gig when he got a deal to record a single at Kijiji Records after winning a freestyle competition on stage. Well for those of you that don’t know him KenyanGospel caught up with the X-po for an exclusive interview.

X-Po - The Truth

“I will not pull out the ‘reaching out to the youth card’ hence I chose hip-hop. No. This culture and its style of music really appealed to me in my young days and this is why I use it.”

His style of writing is primarily expository with penetrating lyrics and energetic delivery. “I prefer it when people sit down to ponder on all these things I’m talking about in my songs,” he says. “I bank on merging scripture and lyrics because it’s God’s word that transforms the soul,” he adds.

“I really shunned the Holy spirit’s efforts as He tried to speak to me during my early years in life.” With peer pressure beckoning, he succumbed to it and led a different lifestyle than he was raised to believe.” It was during his high school days that some habitual sins were formed in a bid to fill that void, that emptiness that engulfed his inside.

However, it was in Form 2 that he wrote his first song. “It was a rap song with a Christ centered theme in it,” he said in a serious tone. “I guess it summarizes how I write to this day. The Holy spirit sometimes speaks to me through the lyrics I pen.” Straight from high school, he joined a college in Nairobi then later to Daystar University where he’s slated to graduate in 2010.

After giving his life to Christ while watching a play called ‘Heaven’s gates and hell’s flames’ he began attending and serving at the WaterBrook Church into 2005. “It wasn’t easy coz I started missing my club days and having inappropriate relationships with girls for convenience sake. When I fell and was just about to give up, I was greatly encouraged by many Christian songs especially those propelled by the scriptures.” Spending time daily with God, he says, really sprung him from a state of confusion to a sense of purpose, which he walks with to this day.

In July 2006, he graduated from the school of music ministry hosted by the WaterBrook church under the tutelage of the renowned Pete Odera.
He has worked with Pete Odera as a back ground vocalist during Donnie McClurkin’s concert in Kenya in August 2007 and also during Pete Odera's launch of the ‘Messenger to Metropolis’ in October 2007.

He has also had shows in two major universities and various churches in Nairobi as well as numerous concerts. X-po’s influences are the Cross Movement and Da T.R.U.T.H. who have proven that Christian rap can work.

“The media’s capability as agenda setters has grown immensely in the past few years. Nobody wants to challenge the products that they put on offer hence this is why I wrote the song ‘The truth’ to challenge this status quo,” he says.

Though virtually new in the Christian music scene, he has been touted as a force to reckon with in future. “There’s nothing better than walking in a divinely initiated purpose for life. Everything else is a façade,” he concludes.
