Shtuko

Shtuko

Gospel Hip Hop group Shtuko is done with their new album titled "Sina Substitute". Who is Shtuko? Remember Davie's "Nisaidie"? Well, Davie is one third of the group Shtuko. James and John Wanjala, who coincidentally are twins complete the group. They have also finished shooting the video for their new single that is also the album's title track. The group's singles "Nisaidie", "Sina Substitute" (featuring newcomer Turu) and "Neno Lako" have not only been featured in the local countdowns but have also made it to the number one spot. KenyanGospel.com had a chat with Davie to find out more about this group that's about to hit you hard!
Listen to Davie's Nisaidie

KG: What does Shtuko mean?

Davie: It means Shocked! Christ shocked us before we could shock the world.

KG: (still trying to decipher that deep translation) So how did the 3 of you hook up?

Davie: We hooked up in '98 as a group but have always been family friends. We are all from Eldoret and thats where our home church is. We have a desire that people may see Christ in us and that someday the church - and us included - will be the perfect bride that Christ expects us to be.

KG: Tell us abit about your background

Davie: Our parents are all pastors but we walked in our own ways.

KG: Meaning?

Davie: We could recite the bible through and through but worshipped Tupac and Biggie on the other hand, alcohol etc. But all that was turned around.

KG: So how did you get to record Nisaidie?

Davie: It was God kabisa! We had come to Nairobi for school and stuff but Jamo and John travelled back home for Christmas. Gideon Kimanzi (the album's producer) needed a rapper on the Same Reason Project and he knew someone I knew and he called me up. When I told him I was in a group, he asked for the other guys but they weren't around so he asked me to go ahead and record the verses. Henrie Mutuku came later on and did the chorus. It was one of those things that just happen for God's purpose - then from there I did a few other songs with Gidi for the same reason project and we just click with him as a producer.

KG: Tell us about your new album

Davie: Our album called Sina Substitute features upcoming artists Turu and Ainea as well as Manjeru and Mueni. I guess Nisaidie can finally be packaged in an album! The album has 10 tracks and is more intensive than party-like so I guess its a good one to listen to as you drive or go through stuff. We also have the song "Sifa" that we did with the group Community of Praise.

Davie also works for the video production company Fiyuhworks (They did that tight Holy Dave video...) Download his single Nisaidie as well as the remix on the downloads section of the site under "Shtuko". We'll up the new album as soon as its out.
