Astar and Holy Dave

Astar interviews Holy Dave

Walapa my people what's goin' down?? Yaani where to start& where to start?! Without a doubt Kenya is the place to be... the BUZZ within the gospel music industry is CRAZY!!! This week Kenyangospel.com's Astar caught up with one MC doing BIG THINGS all for the glory of Christ!! Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls - I introduce to you HOLY DAVE!! Born on the 17th of October 1984, David Muthengi a.k.a Holy Dave knew that he was destined for greatness (I know I also had that same look when he said those words but read on).

(watch Holy Dave's new video)

Like most other Kenyan MCs, his talent was first tested in the mtaa. Yaani kicking it in the hood, freestyles with the boys, you know& the norm! This was back in 1998, Davie (not yet Holy Dave) had the passion. His boys and fellow church members (Parklands Baptist) Barak, Dan, Mbrax, and Nimo (girl) had already formed a group known as Word Deep. Davie thought about joining but after consultation from the Father (i.e. GOD) he decided to go solo... and voila... HOLY DAVE was born! Next step... Drop a single! Holy Dave hooked himself up with a producer "Gitxx" and dropped his first single, "Who Can Rule the Game?" feat. Word Deep. The song did well and landed him shows all across the city. But more importantly it opened his eyes to the demand for holy Hip-Hop within the city! Yaani& GUYS WANTED MORE!! And more they got, Holy Dave teamed up once again with Gitxx and produced his 2nd song & "Even Though I Walk". This mellow afro Hip-Hope was received with open arms. It went straight to the top where it spent time hibernating! (African Chart - Hope FM).

But even with all this success something was a-miss. Holy Dave felt like the inner him& his inner unexploited self was looking for expression. His true love for hardcore untouched screaming holy crunk needed release! BOOOM!!!!!!!! Even Though I Walk (Remix) - Yaani! I repeat& YAANI!!! Let me make the picture clearer - Kapuka is bumping across all gospel stations - Jogg C and Gospel Fathers are the in-thing! How many crunk songs are playing on Kenyan gospel radio - NONE!! As in BILAZ! NADA!! ZERO!! Then to make things worse, the original "Even Though I Walk" is madly loved by all. Then he dares to pull a Tonex (Yaani step 'out the box' and yah!) In the words of some dude, "now why'd you have to go and do that?" Another Gitxx production - Yaani my personal view of the song - it's TIGHT!! Creative, fresh, out the box, not the norm, the perfect word to describe it is, HOLY MADNESS!!! (preview the song in the downloads section) Holy Dave tells me the song brought him a whole bunch of hatters - guys thought it was wack! They said he should have stayed with the original style but also he says it brought him true fans; you either hated of loved the track! It wasn't an on the fence (it's ok) type song! (Download the song and judge for yourself)

Why CRUNK? He loves crunk. He had also mastered the art of crunk music. It was the one thing that he did with ease, passion and love. (Yaani basically he was good at it). There also was a very high and increasing demand for crunk music. Many Christians were turning to secular music to satisfy their urge for crunk and thus Holy Dave saw it best to supply this demand as well as reach the secular crunk market ministry!

Not A joke waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Lets just say that its official... Holy Dave is the Kenyan King of Crunk! (I'm talking both gospel and secular markets yeah I said it!!). His latest club crunk banger is off the hook! Yaani& where to start& the track! Gitxx out did himself. When I first heard the track I was like& aint no way this track is local!! GET SERIOUS!!! The track is without a doubt "not a joke!!" Holy Dave delivers with authority and energy& passion! Strong lyrical flow, inspirational lyrical content! The song talks about the power we have (we being humans not just Christians). This power however cannot be utilized to its fullest unless we are shown by the giver of the power - GOD! Inspired by Faith, Hatters, The hustle, confidence and the lack of support from his folks, (they don't support his musical dream, they however fully support him spiritually) Holy Dave once again raised the bar to higher heights! He teamed up with Juliani (Ukoo Flani/Kijiji Records Hip Hope Artist) and Ken G3 on this gospel Hip-Hop classic!

Holy Dave feat Juliani and Ken G3 - Not A Joke

Just like Nehemiah with one had built a wall and with the other held his sword in ready for battle, Holy Dave has one hand on the mic while the other he holds his bible! (Deep ehh) "Growing Up I was a small child with Big dreams",Holy Dave Not A Joke" The Video The video shot by Alan of fyuhworks is off the chains. Arguably the hottest video of 2006! It portrays Juliani as a newly born Christians "it ain't a joke! Ken (G3) as a Christian filled with ambition it ain't a joke! And Holy Dave a Christian filled with big dreams and purpose - it ain't a joke! Future plans! He's just got started& expect much more from Holy Dave this year! This purpose driven MC is taking east Africa by storm! Look out for this double album release later on this year. His album (yet to be named) is an expression of who he is, and will feature not only crunk but a diverse range of musical styles! He is also going to simultaneously release a mix tape which is an expression of his raw and uncut self straight out HARDCORE!! He will also drop a new video! Ladies and gentlemen there you have it - the once small child with big dreams has started the race at the front. Will he keep the fire burning? Will he make it to the end of the finish line? Only time can tell& one guaranteed fact that cannot be disputed though it that this MC is - NOT A JOKE!!!!!!!
