DJ MOZ

DJ Moz needs no introduction in the Kenyan gospel music scene. He has been a deejay longer than any other gospel DJ in the country. He hosts a show on national radio Metro 101.9 FM called Kubamba on Sunday nights. He also stepped into Plug In, a show I did on Hope 93.3

ABOUT DJ MOZ
Called By God's Grace to reach out to young people, and proclaim the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, I joined the music ministry in September 1999. This was prompted by knowledge that music, a popular form of entertainment, played a big role in the lives of young persons, and further the sensitization that not all music built the character of these people. Some secular music, instead, lured them into lifestyles where they did not achieve their full potential, many engaging in drug and alcohol abuse, and sexual sin. This ministry involves playing and 'mixing' gospel music of all genres (popularly known as DJing) to listeners either through radio, at church concerts and at public or private functions.

RATIONALE
Not all secular music is bad. However, what is normally put out through the media brings out negativity in our young people. The theme of many secular songs is money, sex and drugs. This music greatly affects the life of the young person as it ministers to the soul, resulting in unacceptable behavior. Examples are: teenage suicides, early/teenage pregnancy, violent behavior towards people, usage of vulgar language, etc. Music is a powerful tool that can be used to either mold one into a good person, drawn and continually drawing closer to God, or it can break, one, not only in this life, but also that to come as one drifts further away from God.

BACKGROUND
When I started, one of the greatest hurdles I faced was successfully introducing DJing to believers. At the time I started, DJing was synonymous with mainstream music and lifestyle. A bigger part of this breakthrough was in March 2000 at the "Battle of the Choirs," where

I was invited to be the DJ to entertain the young Christians who were in attendance. The response was a blessing and very encouraging. Following the "Battle of the Choirs" I was offered a job at Family FM 105.2 (now 103.9) to host a drive-time show called Kubamba in May 2000. The aim of the show was to get young people to start listening to gospel music. The response was again, awesome, and there were many young people who dedicated and re-dedicated their lives to Christ. God used Contemporary Christian Music to strengthen the walk of many young people in Kenya. The program later moved to Saturday nights, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. I have since had opportunities to play gospel music on 96.4 Nation FM, 101.9 Metro FM and 93.3 Hope FM (the latter two of which I am still working with). Soon after I began doing radio programs, I decided to invite others to be part of this ministry. Thus, those associated with Kubamba became known as the K-Krew. Some of the current members of K-Krew are pastors, gospel artists, and other DJ's. Beyond playing gospel radio shows, Kubamba also does youth outreach events, school ministries, neighborhood ministries, and prison ministries. In our high school ministry, abstinence is always strongly emphasized. (Some of the K-Krew members have been trained through I.C.L. [I Choose Life]. This is an AIDS/HIV awareness program.)

WHAT TO ACHIEVE
It is my prayer that the ministry of DJing gospel music would:
" Advance the gospel of Christ (Acts 1:8)
" Bless and give strength to the weak (Isaiah 40:31)
" Charge young people to keep their lives pure (Psalm 119:9)
" Draw young people to the saving knowledge of our Lord (Matt. 28:19-20)
" Equip the saints for works of service (Ephesians 4:12)
It is my desire that we, as the body of Christ and especially the young people, would grow up into the fullness of the measure of the stature of Jesus Christ as Lord.

HOW TO ACHIEVE
The forums through which I hope to achieve my objectives are:
" Concerts and street bashes
" Radio/TV programs
" School outreaches working with their respective Christian Unions
" Church youth groups

CHALLENGES
The ministry has not been fully appreciated especially where there are more conservative Christians. This affects the number of church youth groups we are able to minister to. Further, because I am not paid for the radio programs that I host, leasing a permanent work base where practices and proper planning can be held, is difficult to keep. In addition, the ministry also relies greatly upon us having the greatest, latest Christian hit singles and albums. Sourcing and obtaining these is almost impossible. The transportation and hire of equipment are vital to hold any radio show or jam-time. Also, our school ministry is costly, especially due to transporting the whole K-Krew and hiring for the sound system. With only very limited cash flow from DJing in private functions, I am not able to hold as many as these as I would like. I still, however, press on towards the goal&in Christ Jesus for He has been faithful.

BENEFITS
With your support and therefore the growth of this ministry, we pray that there may be a change in this country. We hope that the lives of young people shall be changed and they shall have a desire to live pure and holy lives for God. Promiscuity, alcoholism, drug abuse, theft, AIDS, among others, will decrease as many are drawn to Christ. Your sacrifice can help young people to fully appreciate themselves in Christ, those around them, and what they have been given by God. They shall strive to use what has been given to them by God more effectively for the edification of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:16). We will also be able to go to other parts of the country as ambassadors of Christ through music. In doing this, we will be able to meet our listeners and hold life-changing concerts. It is our prayer that our own nation will see change, that others will witness it and desire to have the same revival in their own countries.

CONCLUSION
Everyday the Lord's faithfulness has been profound. Thank you so much Lord. I hope that in your own way you will be able to support this ministry in money, in kind and in prayer. Our youth can change, our nation can change, Africa can change too; as we all pull together in Christ to realize this change.
